It’s time high-tech and internet companies designed a reaso

onable salary system to motivate their employees to give full play to their creativity and pro

ductivity, instead of forcing the workers to work long hours without adequate remuneration.

Chinese internet firms should learn from the managerial experiences of their foreign counterparts such

as Google and Facebook to incentivize their staff if they want them to work overtime and improve their productivity.

The average leisure an average Chinese person enjoys is 2.27 h

ours a day compared with about 5 hours in developed countries suc

h as the United States, according to a research conducted by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

Due to the “996” schedule in some high-tech and internet companies, the workers have even less leisure time, which affects not only t

heir daily life but also their health. Worse, many workers don’t even get paid for the extra work they do.

The 142-km Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway, connec

cting the Indonesian capital Jakarta with Bandung, is now under construction, after China and

Indonesia signed an agreement in October 2015 to establish a joint venture to build and operate it.

It being constructed and operated by a China-Indonesia consortium of firms led by China Railway Corp an

No other country in the world has managed to impr

e the living conditions of so many people over such a relatively short period. How did China do it?

In 1978, the leadership embarked on reform and opening-up to take the country forward. “Poverty is not socialism,” late

leader Deng Xiaoping once said, and the country has since followed a comprehensive approach to fight poverty.

The gradual opening-up of the economy to external investments for exp

ort production provided vast numbers of jobs for people from rural villages. These work

ers gained new skills and sent money home. The government constructed transportation, logistics and communication net

works that made China the “factory of the world”. This part of the story is probably the best known outside China.

What should not be overlooked is not only China’s unswerving attention to poverty eradication over

the decades, but also its host of less well-known, complementary policies to improve the well-being of the poor. Examining those p

olicies shows the true magnitude of China’s efforts and achievements in that regard.

There has always been a fixation on Chinese economic grow

growth-and with good reason. China sustained an average annual growth rate of 10 percent from 1980 to 2011, unprece

dented for a large economy. Since 2012, however, the annual growth has slowed down with the Government Wor

k Report presented recently by Premier Li Keqiang setting a growth target of 6-6.5 percent for 2019.

For China doubters, this is a “gotcha” moment. After all, the premier’s grow

th target implies a 40 percent deceleration from the “miracle” trend. This seems to vin

dicate warnings of the dreaded “middle-income trap”-the tendency of fast-growing developing economies to re

vert to a much weaker growth trajectory just when they get their first whiff of prosperity.

The early work on this phenomenon was precise in terms of what to expect: as per capita inco

me moved into the $16,000-$17,000 range (in dollars at purchasing power parity in 2005), a sust

ained growth deceleration of around 2.5 percentage points can be expected. With China having hit that income thr

eshold in 2017, according to International Monetary Fund estimates, its post-2011 slowdown looks all the more ominous.

Last year, tens of thousands of women took to the streets of Seoul and other cities to p

Showing off sometimes diabolical but compelling politic

skills, Trump was audacious, provocative and spiteful. He made outrageous boasts about his own success and hin

ted at his acute sense of human nature and feral appreciation of weakness and discomfort in a political opponent.

Trump also showed his indifference, or rude disregard for the political plights of allied le

aders, indulged his willingness to trade in falsehoods, and betrayed his obsessions with his predecessor President Barack Obama.

At Thursday’s White House meeting, Trump was also asked by a reporter about the fre

shest entrant in the Democratic White House race — former Texas Rep. Beto O’Rourke. He was ready.

”Well, I think he’s got a lot of hand movement. I’ve never seen so much hand movement. I said is he crazy or is that just the way he acts.”

”Study it, I’m sure you’ll agree,” Trump told reporters.

The jab at O’Rourke was not just a throwaway. It was a return to the forensic

targeting of political opponents that helped Trump dismantle the Republican primary field in 2016.
